Climb For the Kids 2019 – Cotopaxi Facts
The 2019 Climb For the Kids is shaping up to be the toughest one yet, with Cotopaxi looming as the biggest challenge that Ryan has faced so far. Cotopaxi is one of the world’s tallest active volcanoes and summiting that beast will not be an easy task for our team.
Cotopaxi is what’s known as a stratovolcano, with a total elevation of 19,393 feet. Cotopaxi was first summited way back in 1872 and has proven very popular with guides and climbers alike since then. It is part of the Ecuadorian Andes mountains. In addition to being one of the highest volcanoes in the world, it is also one of the most active. Cotopaxi has erupted over 50 times since 1738. There were violent eruptions in 1744, 1768, 1877, and 1904 that caused pyroclastic flows and destructive mudflows, also known as lahars. It has been dormant for more than 70 years, which is an unusually long period for Cotopaxi.
The Climb to the top of Cotopaxi is a 9-day journey. There is a period of acclimation before the climb, where the climbers spend time at higher elevation to get their bodies and lungs ready for the climb. This is crucial for preparation, because the higher elevation means less air, making physical exertion more difficult. The preparation takes place in Quito, Ecuador’s capital. As part of the famous “Avenue of the Volcanoes”, it’s surrounded by mountains.
Then, there are several hikes and short climbs to get used to moving in the atmosphere before the actual climb.
Summiting Cotopaxi will be a long, difficult, dangerous climb. This is a volcano that experienced climbers have difficulty with and will present a unique challenge to the team.
