We love April Fools’ Day here at the Clayton office of The Home Loan Expert. It’s a day where NOTHING can be taken seriously, especially not on the internet. When you see something that you think is too good to be true? It probably is. There’s always at least one great hoax going around, getting viral attention, and getting shared from your aunt’s Facebook page to you. It’s fun, but sometimes, it’s tough to tell what’s true and what’s a hoax on April Fools’.
From Sidd Finch to Gmail Motion, there have been some great pranks pulled on people every year. Sidd Finch was a supposed pitching phenom that the Mets had signed in 1968, according to Sports Illustrated. They claimed that the kid threw 168 mph. 168! And people fell for it, because it was in Sports Illustrated, which had a sterling reputation for journalistic integrity at the time. The only real clue to the hoax was from the subheading of the article. “He’s a pitcher, part yogi and part recluse. Impressively liberated from our opulent life-style, Sidd’s deciding about yoga —and his future in baseball.” The first letter of each of these words, taken together, spelled “H-a-p-p-y A-p-r-i-l F-o-o-l-s D-a-y — A-h F-i-b”. George Plimpton got everyone with that one.
Google Motion was a different animal. Google has been known for these kind of tricks in the past, but this was a 2011 claim that emails could be opened with a wave, and that you could post a reply by pointing over your shoulder. The best part of the prank was the next week, when their engineers actually proved that it was possible to build it the next week, using off the shelf hardware. You just never know about wild claims made on April 1st.
