When you look at how much time you spend in the car, or a train, or in transit to your place of work, many people are shocked.  An hour-long commute each way turns a 9-hour work day into 11 hours away from home.  This can lead to job dissatisfaction or resentment from your family, especially if you are always getting home late, getting caught in traffic, or being forced to miss family events because of your commute.  So, when you are thinking of buying a new home, it’s great to look at the length of time that you will spend getting to work.  Your commute can help you buy a new home if you do the math and figure out what it’s costing you, and factor that into the calculations.

Your time is worth money.  Every minute of windshield time is time that you are doing something that you probably don’t enjoy.  Sitting in traffic, inching forward, getting honked at by the other jerks on the highway, these are not conducive to a good time.  Nobody confuses sitting in traffic with going to an amusement park.

Just look at the home’s price, taxes, and the cost of your commute.  Drive it if you have time to help you to determine if it’s too far or if traffic stinks when you have to go in.  Is your favorite drive-through or gas station on the route?  All of these factor into the trip.  Make this part of the decision and don’t buy a home you regret, make your home somewhere you’re excited to get in the car and drive to.
