We’re Open For St. Patrick’s Day, Even If It’s a Saturday

Tomorrow is St. Patrick’s Day, a most sacred holiday around The Home Loan Expert offices.  It’s a day of celebration, and of being with friends.    However, that shouldn’t stop you from calling us about refinancing or buying a new home this spring.  Even though St. Patrick’s Day is on a Saturday, we will still be available to take your call, meet with you, and go over your options or get you pre-approved for your mortgage or refinance.  We’re open for St. Patrick’s Day, even if it’s a Saturday.

It’s a terrific time to refinance.  Interest rates are still near historic lows and home values are skyrocketing.  You can save thousands of dollars on your mortgage if you come in today.  Why today?  WHY NOT?  Spring starts next Tuesday, the weather is getting better and better every morning, and I want you to have the lowest payment possible for your home.  We can save you enough money to really live it up next year.  Take a cash out refinance and build a new deck for next year, and have a party at home!

There are a lot of fun ways to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, and here are some tips to help you make the most of it!

Wear your GREEN

Guys, this is so important.  Know the dress code!  St. Patrick’s Day is all about the GREEN!  You don’t have to go buy a “Kiss Me, I’m Irish” shirt, or an “I’m Seeing Leprechauns” Sweater, but make sure that, at least, you wear a green shirt.  If you want to go the whole hog, that’s fine.  But to fit in at a St. Paddy’s Day bash, you need to go GREEN.  Even if you’re stuck working, you can still throw some green in there, maybe a tie, or green socks, but it’s no excuse not to get into the spirit!

Accessories Make You Stand Out

If you’re going to a party, get creative.  You can go with the top hat or some beads, but accessories make you stand out from the crowd (in a good way)!  As long as it’s Irish-themed, there’s really no bounds for good taste or gaudiness.  In fact, it’s an Irish tradition for anybody celebrating the holiday to wear a group of Shamrocks, held up by a clothespin, to your top, over your heart.  Since these aren’t a cinch to find, we recommend a pin.  You can also have a lot of fun with hair dye!  Get some spray-in-a-can hair dye and go to town, just make sure that you get the non-toxic, non-permanent kind.  You might have to work tomorrow.  You can also paint your face, with Irish flags or shamrocks being fun ways to dress up your face.

Talk Like a Local

If you’ve ever hung out with true Irishmen, you know that they have their own words and phrases.  For example, my friend Paul used the phrase “What’s the craic?” to say “What’s going on,” or “What’s up”.  Try it out on your friends, it’s a great way to immediately confuse them, and sound like you know the culture.

Try the Cabbage

There are a lot of foods associated with the Irish that you can try on St. Patrick’s Day.  Head to a traditional pub for corned beef and cabbage, or some lamb stew.  Give bangers and mash, traditional Irish soda bread, Shepherd’s Pie, potato bread and black pudding a try, if you can find them on your menu.  (Corned beef and cabbage is a more traditionally Irish-American dish, but it counts.)

Get an Earful of the Irish

Listen to some traditional Irish music on St. Patrick’s Day!  Try some Celtic, traditional folk, or just some good, old-fashioned pub songs!  There will usually be some good Irish bands playing locally on March 17th, find one and check it out!  If you have trouble, look at The Chieftains, The Dubliners, Planxty and Clannad as examples of traditional Irish bands.  If it’s not your jam, acts like U2, Van Morrison and the Cranberries are all Irish, so give that a spin!

Head to a Parade

There is a St. Patrick’s Day parade in almost every city, with St. Louis, Chicago, Indianapolis, Nashville, and Birmingham being no exceptions to the rule!  You can have fun all day at the parades, then hit the pubs or parties that night!  Parades celebrate Irish culture, and are a great way to learn and celebrate at the same time!
