- The seller or agent is out of the country or you can’t talk to them in person. If no representative is available to meet, it’s a scam.
- Ultra-urgent offers that scream “Today Only” or “Don’t miss this markdown!” A home sale is not the same as an appliance or used car sale.
If you use common sense you can avoid many of these scams. Make sure that you scan your emails as well. Hackers tried to get their hands on nearly $1 billion of your dollars last year in mortgage and home sale processes. The send emails pretending to be us, or the seller, asking for personal information or other sensitive materials. If you get an email like that, always check the sending email, not just the name, and please call us if you feel strange about any request and we will be happy to talk it over with you or expose a scam artist.
Think About a Fixer-Upper
Even if you aren’t ready to Flip That House, a fixer-upper can be a great way to get a huge bargain on a home. If you get a great deal on a foreclosure or a home in disrepair, you can still end up ahead after the cost of renovations. Just make sure that you have a contractor look at the home and get a great inspection. If you need foundation or structure work, it may not be worth it.
